There seems to be some confusion on wired headsets for Android, as in "why doesn't the remote control" work? Something similar to this:

You can find this in most discount stores, for price of somewhere like $5 to $10 if you buy cheap ones, or they can go for $100+ if you go for fancy brand like Dr. Dre Beatz. But that little microphone bud has like 3 buttons (or maybe just 1).

And they do NOT work on Android. Wonder why?

Because that's covered by an Apple patent. Really. Granted in 2011.

Apple could have been gracious and let everybody use that design, and every cheap headphone maker already do, but no. Apple back then was like "NO YOU CAN'T!"

So Android ended up with a different headphone plug design. The plugs are identical, but the signals passed along are different enough so that the Apple headset won't work on Android plugs... and vice versa.

But there is hope!

And there are a handful of makers who made Android-specific compatible headphones with the Android style control buttons. Klipsch have one called the S4A... and they are currently at about $50 each online. In Radio Shack they are probably in the 80 to 90 range.

Bose and NUCS also make Android compatible wired headsets.

If you want to shop online, DeGaussLabs have some very good ones. Their "DualDriver" is reputedly very good, sounds as good as Shures that costs twice as much, according to some reports.

If you are willing to do some experimentation and are handy with soldering iron and electronics, you can build your own by modifying an existing headset through instructions. I am not aware of any "pass-thru" adapters, though presumably one can be made, but whether any PROFIT can be realized is a different problem.

Most of these has a companion Android app that let you map the buttons to other functions.

Bluetooth buttons are universal. Your Bluetooth headset buttons would work on any device.

Got any more questions on Android headset? Post them in the comments.

I current use either a LG-730 Tone Plus, or a Jlab "Comfort" wired headset.

I've hacked it so it runs both Amazon AND Google Play (thanks to XDA developers) but I need WiFi.

And for that, SlimKat failed to deliver. It's not their fault... Google changed KitKat's WiFi tether to make it more carrier friendly. I tried an Xposed module that supposedly fixes this, but I can't get it to work.

So it's back to Jelly Bean for me... at least for now.GuyReviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17270600804829601202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-384844015848438902.post-25124628738935104552014-03-26T00:17:00.000-07:002014-03-26T00:17:53.189-07:00UPGRADE BIONIC TO KITKAT: The JourneyMotorola's Droid Bionic had always been much of a bastard child. it was announced, then retracted, then relaunched, only to be replaced a few months later by the RAZR line. And officially it's too old to receive Kitkat, i.e. Android 4.4. Final update it got was Jelly Bean... 4.1.2.

But don't let that discourage you. There are ways.

My phone was already tweaked to the max, with Cyanogen Mod 10 and all the CPU tweaks I can find. And with extended battery I last most of the day, but when CM10 is getting bogged down, a new start is needed, and thus entered... SlimKat, one of the handful KitKat ports for "Targa" (that's the internal name used by motorola).

My phone is already rooted, and safestraped with rom slots already setup. I did have to delete some stuff to make room for another ROM slot (each takes about 3.5GB), but that's not that difficult with apps like DiskUsage. Before that, I made sure I made a fresh nandroid backup of my latest CM10 setup (so if I have to go back I can)

Installing SlimKat turned out to take longer than it should due to my flaky USB port. I have a proper USB2 cable (AmazonBasics) but when I go USB mode and try to transfer 2 GB of stuff it just quit in the middle, the port goes bing-bong (disconnect and reconnect sound from Windows), and copy failed. I must have spend 4 hours trying different ports and different cables (3 each, in various combos) I ended up using my alternate transfer: WiFi Explorer.

After making sure all the MD5 matches, the ROM's flashed into the slot and boot commenced, and everything looks good. Had to set up Google again, but it's not a huge deal.

I wasted another 3 hours when I can't install any third party apps. Turns out my battery-bar overlay blocks installs. (WHA?!) Took me 3 hours to figure it out. Yeah.

Now it's working, and it'll take me another day or two to tweak it back to the way I had it.
Found this article over at Android Authority, and that got me thinking:

http://www.androidauthority.com/android-steal-other-operating-systems-143499/

1. Better Widgets

Agreed, Android widgets never seem to go together with a consistent visual theme. Different UI designers have different aesthetics and slight variations on the same theme. How many ways can you do a "black button"? Just the way it's sized and how round are the corners, as well as the shade of black and "edge" can drive you bonkers if you're looking for consistency and "visual coherence" if you prefer a buzz term.

Yes, Microsoft's Windows Phone "Live Tiles" look boring, but they are CONSISTENT. Why do you think there are so many themes and iconpaks and whatnot on the market? Because people want CONSISTENCY, and Android's widgets are anything but consistent.

Maybe future Android can demand an app maker to create multiple versions of the widget, and must provide one with NO background and no "chrome", and use the system provided widget theme.

2. Notification Count on Apps

Hey, don't we already have this? Nova Launcher already have this by creating a standard where different apps can provide count to the launcher. Already saw Gmail, SMS, and so on. Now if only Android can standardize this into a system API...

3. Even better notification

Agreed. Apple's iOS borrowed the Android notification bar, and improved it by adding consistent feel and made it even MORE useful by ability to group notifications. Android needs to borrow that back, and add on to that as well. The ICS notifications are kinda meh, to maintain compatibility. The newer apps can do better, much better. Notifications are also on a first-come-first-serve basis and others can jump on top or such, never in particular order. This needs to be a system setting, like app X's notification should always go first, and so on, and ability to group notifications (a lot like Windows group stuff on the task bar)

4. Better Social Integration

Agreed, iOS got Android beat here with TIGHT Twitter integration, among other things. And Microsoft's "Social Hub" is just as good, if not better. Android's contacts/phone is quite lame in comparison. There are a lot of third-party contact managers, and I've tried dozens, but none of them work the same and all of them are lacking something one way or another.

5. Hardware Silence Key

This one I'm a bit ambivalent about. I personally think Android phones should have one or two buttons on the side that users can map to special functions, such as camera (where did that camera button go, hmmm?) but I can sort of see the reason why they don't as physical buttons will fail due to fatigue. Still, maybe they can incorporate a "center" button between the two volume buttons for special purposes.

6. Easy TV Out

This one I'm also ambivalent about, probably because my Droid Bionic has a microHDMI port. Personally, I think they should go wireless... Some sort of micro WiFi transceiver that pipes whatever's on the screen to the TV. Think WiDi on the laptop, and matching display adapter on the TV, then think WiDi in a smartphone.

7. Microsoft Office

I'm not too worried about it as I have a phone, not a tablet. If you have a tablet and a BT keyboard I can see why you'd want office around. And besides, I think Google's already working on it with Google Drive.

8. Consistent Back Button Behavior

Well, this is more of a design quirk and unspecified behavior in Android "best design practices".

9. App folders in the App Grid / App Drawer

Uh, some launchers already do that. You can even filter by "categories".

10. Better Text Input

Heck, Swiftkey got them all beat (though the "trace / flow" thing still is not as good as FlexT9, IMHO)

Sticking with ICS for nowTo make a long story short, my attempt to update to the official JB was a disaster. Due to the way I had rooted and removed bloatware, the OTA update will NOT update my phone at all. Their install script expects to find all the existing bloatware and whatnot there, active and NOT disabled and not updated / merged into ROM. And it can't deal with my current setup.

And so far nobody had unpacked that file to allow for easier update. Instead, the only way to use that update is to nuke the phone, reinstall ICS fresh (using procedure that I highlighted before), then allow the JB OTA update.

I chose NOT to do that, as I don't want to go without my phone for THAT long. (That process will take HOURS) and there's a very good chance I'll lose root access, thus unable to restore my apps and data.

So right now I've settled on using an ICS based ROM called Icarus Remix (aka Stripped). It's still Motorola's official Bionic ICS 4.0.4, but cleaned up, and debloated, and with a few mods that borrowed a few elements from Samsung's Touchwiz (including S-Voice, the licensed version of Vlingo). I may be able to get Google Now for ICS running on this.

I tried the CyanogenMod 10.1 Jellybean port but it's quite buggy.

Stay tuned.
Just in case, as a backup, I'm going to reinstall Android SDK/ADT to get Android Debug Bridge working. I have the sync cable here somewhere... :)
For some people, all they need is to wait for the OTA (over the air) updates, and voila, it's done.

Not me.

I had rooted my Bionic, and I have Safestrap installed, but safe mode is not active. I've tried with recovery installed and not installed, nothing there.

I am still on .893 Gingerbread, and I can't update to .902, the official update (there is also .905 update, but that's more of a rare patch). I can "force" an update by going to Settings / About Phone / System Update, and it will download a 60MB .902 update file, but it won't install. It goes in, then it reboots when it's about 40 percent installed, and reverts back to .893, with "update has failed!" message.

So I am now going to FORCE an update... by doing it manually.

There are a ton of instructions, but they essentially say the same thing. I'll use the "House of Bionic" version as it seems to be the easiest to do.

You will need:

A Windows PC (I use Win7 Home Premium 64bit)

A USB to MicroUSB cable (the original Motorola one is preferred, but any USB to MicroUSB will do)

A charged Motorola Bionic (preferably, at least 75% charged, as you'll use a bit of juice in between, and if it runs out of power, the device may be bricked)

And Internet connection, so you an download some files.

Got all that? Let's go.

First, download and install the latest Motorola Device Manager

For Windows, go to

http://www.mymotocast.com/download/MDM?platform=windows

You may also want to visit this URL if that above one doesn't work.

https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com

And install the driver. It will probably autolaunch the backup assistant plus thing. Just go to tray icon and turn it off. (i.e. "Do nothing"). If it wants an upgrade, do it. Latest version as of 26-OCT-2012 is .28

Second, test the device driver install.

When the drivers are finished installing, and reboot if needed, connect the USB cable to your Bionic and see if the device drivers installed properly. It should uninstall and reinstall a bunch of drivers for your Motorola XT875, which is your Bionic.

Make sure it's all done, and you didn't get any odd errors like unknown device, not installed, and such. If you did, go to device manager, remove them, then disconnect and reconnect the Bionic to force reinstall.

When it's all done, continue.

Third, download 4 files

Go to
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/4026-samurihls-house-of-bionic/

And download

The House of Bionic Installed (main EXE)
The FXZ file you need
The RSD file you need
The Webtop file you need

They are all EXEs (self-extracting ZIPs) so your security setting may balk, just override them. Download them all into whereever you want, keep them together.

Install them in order you downloaded them. They should all go into DESKTOP, just keep all the default directories. While it says Webtop is optional (and I personally never used the webtop) if you don't install it your update will go into a boot loop (black screen with slight vibrations every minute or so). So install it ANYWAY.

Assuming you are installed .246 (the ICS update) you should have

DESKTOP/SamuriHL_HouseofBionic/
and inside you should have a /rsd and /246_RXZ among other directories.

When all four have been "installed", continue to next step.

Fourth: Start Installation

Open the DESKTOP/SamuriHL_HouseofBionic subdirectory.
Run the houseofbionic.BAT file in the subdirectory, and follow the instructions.

Generally speaking, the batch file sends over the updates using RSD (on the PC side) and Fastboot (on the phone side), then tells the phone to process them automatically.

Just select the FXZ, then KEEP DATA. If you don't see the FXZ or it gives something about "not found", you didn't install the FXZ file earlier or you changed the default directory. If it says RSD not found, you didn't install the RSD tool!

The script will ask if you want to boot to Fastboot. Say Yes. The phone will then boot and show just a couple white letters that says something FASTBOOT on top. Don't touch it. Motorola RSD Lite program will load on PC side and push the updates over. Just don't do ANYTHING and let it run, even when it seems to be "stuck".

The only time you have to worry is RSD has a message that says "manually power up the phone". That usually means the phone is no longer responding to RSD commands, and that means it's probably stuck in a boot loop, which means you forgot to install the WEBTOP thing. In that case, do the startover below.

Oops, starting over

This is if you goofed up and didn't install the stuff you needed.

First, download and install the WEBTOP thing! (in fact, download and install ALL OF THE ABOVE again)

Second, disconnect the USB cable from the phone, then pull the battery. You have to force the phone into AP Fastboot to start over. Put battery back in, then hold the down volume button while you press the power button. Your phone should boot into AP Fastboot.

Third, close RSD Lite, and accept the warning message about potential damage to the device.

Fourth, Go to the batch script window, then press space bar twice to close the batch script

Fifth, run the HouseofBionic.bat. Pick the same options at what to do (FXZ, keep data). When it asks if you want to boot into AP Fastboot, say N, as your phone is already in Fastboot. Just connect the cable, then press space to continue, and let it go.

After about a few minutes, you should be in Ice Cream Sandwich, with all your apps and settings intact!

X-Plane is one of the sims where it actually calculate the aerodynamic forces of the air against the wings and such, so it is extremely realistic. The free version requires a huge download for the terrain data, but after you're done, and if you have a decent phone, you'll get a spectacular game where the terrain is so realistic you'll swear it's on a PC.

And this is a full flight-sim, complete with NAV beacons, throttle, flap, rudder, brakes, and so on. You can also set up "missions", watch instrument panels, and more.

Definitely give it a try.
However, this GLU game offers full Internet multiplayer with built-in matchmaking, so that's pretty cool for a freemium game.

At its heart, Indestructible is a twin-stick shooter, where you move in one direction and shoot in another direction. It's basically a Mad Max type scenario where you drive this vehicle and shoot at any enemies. It's an Isometric view 3D and the vehicles are TINY on a phone, but you need it to see the field. There are at least three different arenas (and you *can* fall off the edge) there are also team play (unlocked later). You can play single player (basically survival against waves of drones) or play ranked matches against other players.

As stated before, you will pay for lots of things. You gain XP, and coins through playing, but the *good* stuff needs to be unlocked through Glu Credits (gold coins), but there are ways to get more by downloading other Glu games, login with your Facebook login, and so.

As a twin stick shooter this one is quite good on my Droid Bionic (dual core 1 GHz) and entertaining, though to really advance in the game you need $$$.
It's pretty decent.. though the music is a bit grating. Not bad.

There are plenty of levels, and you are rated for multiple levels of success (use the least amount of material).

Worth a try at least.
Google had partnered with Boingo for some free WiFi Hotspot access, but the effort haven't reached the Boingo app.

Boingo is a Hotspot finder that shows you where free and paid WiFi Hotspots are but this is really their webpage disguised as an app. As it's free, it may be of some use if you travel a lot.

You are of course, constantly reminded that you really need to pay them for access to "premium" hotspots.
Most are actual parts from the Ford Performance Catalog, and you actually can custom built a Mustang just like that.

However, this is mainly man's version of "dress-up", as there's no driving or interior demo and such. It's strictly static, albeit nice overlays of various graphical elements, and there are a LOT of options so you can recreate almost ANY of the classic Mustang looks.

It's a big download though. Beware.
App a Day is basically a marketing program where the app will remind you (through notification bar) that you can download this cool app / game for free.

You merely click through to Google Play Store, and so far it's full of micro-transaction heavy games.

It's not bad, but it's not that spectacular either.

When I use an "app discovery" tool, I'd prefer it to check what apps I already own, and recommend me some that I didn't know about but similar, not just random "try this!"

http://www.appbrain.com/app/app-a-day-for-android/me.onemobile.appadayGuyReviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17270600804829601202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-384844015848438902.post-81413564093927770542012-09-29T17:26:00.000-07:002012-09-29T17:26:00.193-07:00AAQR: Blood and Glory - LegendBlood and Glory: Legend is a sequel to Glu's "Blood and Glory", where the player takes on role of a Rome-like gladiator who must defeat various enemies. While the main game is free, the game is HEAVY in micro-transactions, wanting you to buy various things to enhance your hero. The graphics are pretty spectacular, and quite responsive on the test machine (Droid Bionic), but the constant nag for "you need to upgrade!" is getting a bit... lame.

You play this anonymous gladiator who needs to fight his way through the territories, and end up in the capital, where you will seek your revenge. On the way, you'll duel various other gladiators, from lightning fast assassins to monstrous giants, to brawlers, dual-bladesmen, and much more.

The controls are pretty simple: you can dodge left or right (depending on which way is the attack), you can parry (swipe in the opposite direction of the attack when it comes), you can shield block (limited use), and you can attack (slash in different directions by drawing a line on screen). It relies a lot on timing. The idea is block the attacks, and attack yourself. If you parry successfully you can execute a "glorious strike", which is a "super-attack" that do a lot of damage. Whoever is left with a lifebar is the winner, of course.

The actual fight is surprisingly effective, as you'll get big sprays of blood when you hurt the enemy. This game is rated M for mature. Really.

The game then throws various stuff at you. There are two currencies in this game: gold, and coins.

Gold you start with a few, and you can get more by clicking on offers like "install this game and get 10 gold on us". If you finish certain challenges, like "fight 3 battles today" you can get a few more. However, you cannot earn these in battle. And some of the best equipment can only be bought with gold.

Coins, you earn from the battle, and typically, only a few hundred per battle, as least in the first few levels. When a typical piece of equipment is 3000, you can imagine this is not going to be easy.

There are a dozen things to spend your money on: helmets, weapon, shield, armor, potions (heal, attack, or defend), helmet, amulet, amulet slots (so you can use more than one amulet at a time to get stacked benefits),

You can wear amulets to enhance your XP gain (which controls how fast you level up), enhance your coin intake (extra 10%), and so on. You start with one amulet slot, and you'll gain some amulets later. You will need to buy additional amulet slots to wear more than one at a time.

You are also nagged at or before each battle about "pay $2.99 to double the gain, up to 32x!" not to mention buttons to "buy a special pack for larger discounts!" including beginner's pack, veteran's pack, and so on, which are all in-game purchase bundles.

I played through chapter 3-1 and I'm already outmatched, as I don't have enough money to upgrade all the equipment. I am only doing about attack 10 weapon, so it takes me twice as long to kill someone than if I have a attack 20 weapon. And the game lets you know that... every match now it's "the enemy has better equipment than you: upgrade your helmet [or other pieces of stuff] now!"

It's pretty, and different enemies have different styles of attack, but you'll probably tire of the constant nag to buy this and buy that.

Drift Mania Championship is a 3rd person drift driving simulator. You control this car, in the slightly behind 3rd person view. However, I am not convinced you can properly simulate drifting, which requires very precise control, on a phone.

The game has a "throttle bar" on the right side of the screen, and you turn left and right by tilt. And the graphics are pretty good.

I have problem with the control, as I can't seem to modulate the throttle to spin the wheels to induce drift while keep the car "sideways". I can drift in small increments, but I can't stay on the road, and you need to stay on the road. There aren't any 'driver aids' available, and tutorial consists of merely a couple slides explaining the gauges and controls.

Still, it's worth trying out. Maybe you'll be more adept in it than I was.

Robin, which just underwent an overhaul, is actually pretty impressive. The new version has a huge button combined with a map view and is really designed for car use, where you can operate most features hands-free (one or two may require a tap on the screen or two).

And Robin talks back, using any voice you have installed. Those of you who have IVONA installed (download all three English voices: US, UK, and Australia) should have much better voice than the built-in Pico TTS.

And Robin will give you a full conversation. You say "tell me a joke", and Robin will answer. It will do context sensitive search based on location. If you search for a location it recognizes, it'll display Yelp link and Nav link. It knows most commands, and if it doesn't, it'll do a Google search for you. It will link to any Nav package you got, either Google Maps or Waze, or even others like Tomtom.

It'll do social updates, voice dial, and the other stuff. It's pretty impressive, and it's free.

Any way, expect to see a TON of updates in the next week or so, at least one review a day. Stay tuned!GuyReviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17270600804829601202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-384844015848438902.post-17016043433186561272012-07-25T09:59:00.000-07:002012-07-25T09:59:01.003-07:004th of July Mahjong (puzzle)Mahjong tile matching game is dime a dozen in the App Store, so this guy made a "4th of July" version with a bit more red white and blue tile theme.

But it's the same game.

In the present, it appears that ONLY SAMSUNG has listened seriously. Apparently Jelly Bean, Android 4.1, is already rolling out to users of Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3, as well as Galaxy Nexus.

Motorola, on the other hand, is just rolling out Ice Cream Sandwich (older version) to RAZR series and the previously promised update for Droid Bionic is "coming soon", August or September. Considering that ICS came out in 2011, this is just ridiculous, so ridiculous that next revision already got released!

This is seriously making me wonder WHY I bought Motorola, which is now OWNED BY GOOGLE THEMSELVES! Even Sony is beating Motorola in the update game!

Where's the commitment?
